When was the last time you sat outside with a cup of tea, worked in the garden, or enjoyed an afternoon at the lake?
Those moments are some of the best parts of summer.
They’re also the moments that quietly shape our skin.
Most of us grew up believing sunscreen was simply about preventing a sunburn. While that’s certainly important, it’s only part of the story.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned after more than 25+ years of working with skin is that healthy skin isn’t protected by one big decision. It’s protected by the small choices we make every day.
Thatâs why this monthâs article is called Beyond the Burn.
Because sun protection isnât just about avoiding redness or discomfort – itâs about understanding whatâs happening beneath the surface of your skin every single day.
âď¸ Understanding UV: More Than Just Sunshine
Sunlight contains different types of ultraviolet (UV) rays, and the two that affect our skin the most are UVA and UVB.
UVB: The Burning Rays
UVB rays are the ones most people are familiar with. Theyâre responsible for sunburn and tend to be stronger during the middle of the day and in the summer months.
They affect the skin’s outer layers and are often what alert us that weâve had too much sun.
UVA: The Aging Rays
UVA rays are present all day, every day – regardless of the season or weather. They can pass through clouds and even glass, meaning your skin is exposed whether you’re driving, sitting by a window, or spending time outdoors on a cloudy day.
Unlike UVB, UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin. Over time, they contribute to:
- Premature aging
- Loss of elasticity
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Pigmentation changes
And because they donât cause immediate discomfort like a burn, their effects often go unnoticed until years later.
âď¸ Why UV Exposure Matters Every Day
One of the most common misconceptions is that sun protection only matters on bright, sunny days.
In reality, up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds.
That means your skin is still being exposed during everyday activities – walking the dog, running errands, or sitting outside for a few minutes at a time.
These small, repeated exposures add up.
Itâs not usually one long day in the sun that creates lasting change – itâs the accumulation of daily habits over time.
đ What We Canât Always See
One of the most powerful tools we use in the treatment room is skin analysis with the Observ520x.
This allows us to see underlying sun damage before it becomes visible on the surface.
This might include:
- Early pigmentation changes
- Uneven tone beneath the skin
- Areas of increased sensitivity
Understanding whatâs happening beneath the surface allows us to take a proactive approach, supporting the skin before those changes become more noticeable.
đż Small Habits, Lasting Results
~ Healthy skin is supported by what we do consistently, not occasionally
Simple daily habits can make a meaningful difference over time:
- Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen each morning
- Reapplying every two hours when spending extended time outdoors
- Wearing a hat or seeking shade during peak hours
- Being mindful of incidental sun exposure throughout the day
These arenât about restriction – theyâre about care.
Theyâre small, supportive choices that help protect the skin youâll have tomorrow.
