Fall Is Here. Does That Mean It’s Peel Season?

Every fall, as the weather changes and summer ends, we start hearing more about peel season.

After months of sun exposure, you may be noticing more pigmentation, uneven tone, congestion, or changes in texture. Fall and winter can be an appropriate time to consider more corrective treatments.

But does the arrival of fall automatically mean your skin needs a peel?

Not necessarily.

If you’ve followed me for a while, you know that I tend to look at skin a little differently.

The calendar doesn’t determine what your skin needs.

Your skin does.

So why am I introducing professional peels?

I’ve thought about this carefully.

My approach to skin has been strongly influenced by corneotherapy and supporting the health and function of the skin barrier. Because of that, I’ve always been cautious about aggressive exfoliation and treatments that continually remove the surface without first considering the skin’s condition.

During my Dermaviduals training this summer, René the Dermaviduals educator shared an analogy that really stayed with me:

Think of your skin like a bank account.

Before we make withdrawals, we need to make deposits — and the withdrawals should never outnumber the deposits.

It’s a simple way to explain how I believe we should care for skin.

Appropriate home care, hydration, skin-supportive lipids, daily sun protection, and barrier-supportive treatments are all deposits.

Exfoliation is a withdrawal.

That doesn’t mean a withdrawal is always bad.

Controlled exfoliation can help when we’re trying to improve concerns such as pigmentation, congestion, or uneven texture.

But before I make that withdrawal, I want to know that we’ve been making deposits.

Barrier health still comes first

Not every skin is ready for a peel simply because there is something we’d like to correct.

If the skin is irritated, dehydrated, reactive or struggling to maintain its barrier, my priority is going to be supporting that first — not asking the skin to do more.

I’ve talked about this before in Barrier Repair: Why Skin Sometimes Looks Worse Before It Gets Better, where I explain the three stages I often think about with barrier recovery:

Relief → Rebuild → Resilience

That final stage – resilience– becomes particularly important when we start considering more corrective treatments.

Once the skin is functioning better, maintaining hydration and becoming less reactive, we have a much stronger foundation for addressing concerns such as pigmentation, congestion, and uneven texture.

In other words:

We’ve made some deposits before asking the skin to make a withdrawal.

So what made these peels different?

I’ve looked at professional peels over the years, but I hadn’t found an approach that felt like a natural fit for how I work with skin.

When I learned more about the ClearChoice PRO NeuroGenics Peels, I became interested because the focus wasn’t on exfoliation alone.

They are still chemical peels. They contain acids and create controlled exfoliation. I’m not trying to make them sound like something they’re not.

What interested me was what ClearChoice incorporated alongside the exfoliating ingredients.

Their Neurogenic peel concept incorporates neuropeptides, adaptogens, and calming botanicals to reduce inflammation, support barrier function, and improve skin resilience.

In other words, the approach isn’t simply:

How much can we exfoliate?

It’s also:

How do we support the skin while we’re asking it to tolerate exfoliation?

That distinction matters to me.

Correction doesn’t have to mean aggression

The ClearChoice system includes three different professional peels, which lets me choose the approach based on the skin rather than trying to make one peel work for everyone.

BarrierSync particularly interested me because it focuses on barrier support, hydration, and mild exfoliation. It combines exfoliating ingredients such as lactic acid, papain, and gluconolactone with ingredients including glycerin, urea, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-8, and Agastache mexicana.

Clariplex gives me an option for concerns such as congestion, blemishes, and uneven texture. It combines salicylic, glycolic, and azelaic acids with supportive ingredients including niacinamide, panthenol, glycerin, and Palmitoyl Tripeptide-8.

BioFade targets discoloration and uneven skin tone. It combines mandelic and lactic acids with targeted ingredients including tranexamic acid, glutathione, and tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate.

What I like is that I don’t have to make one peel fit every skin.

And you don’t need to figure out which one you need.

That’s my job.

I’ll choose the appropriate peel based on your skin, what we’re trying to accomplish, and how your skin responds throughout the program.

The protocol was just as important to me as the ingredients

Another thing that made me comfortable introducing this system was how ClearChoice approaches the treatment itself.

Their professional protocols recommend two weeks of skin conditioning before the first peel. Before proceeding, the skin is assessed for readiness – including ensuring there is no active irritation, open lesions, or flare-ups, and that the barrier feels hydrated and strong.

The treatment doesn’t end with exfoliation either.

Their protocols move back into calming, hydration, and protection after the peel.

That fits the way I want to work.

Prepare the skin. Correct when appropriate. Then go back to supporting it.

Or, to go back to the bank account analogy:

Deposit → carefully withdraw → deposit again.

What if my skin isn’t ready?

Then we don’t peel it.

It’s really that simple.

If you’re already a Skin Care by Shawna client and following an appropriate professional home-care routine, you may already have a good foundation in place.

Many of my existing clients use Dermaviduals. You will not need to switch your home care to ClearChoice simply because I’m using ClearChoice professional peels. If your current routine supports your skin well, we’ll keep using it.

If you’re new to professional skincare, or your current routine isn’t providing the foundation I want to see before a peel, we’ll start with preparation.

Your first appointment will be an Advanced Skin Analysis with OBSERV imaging. No facial or peel will be done at this appointment.

We’ll look at your skin, your current routine, and what you’d like to improve. I’ll then select your home-care prep, including an appropriate cleanser, night cream, and daily SPF.

You’ll use those products consistently for a minimum of two weeks before your first peel.

Then we’ll reassess.

And two weeks doesn’t automatically mean your skin will be ready.

If it needs more time, we give it more time.

I’d much rather continue making deposits than make a withdrawal the skin isn’t ready for.

Why a series of three?

I won’t be offering one-off peels.

Professional peels at Skin Care by Shawna will be offered as a series of three, generally spaced approximately 2–4 weeks apart, depending on how the skin responds. This follows the treatment interval recommended in the ClearChoice professional protocols.

This lets us work progressively rather than trying to accomplish everything in one treatment.

We reassess your skin throughout the series, and the peel I choose can change as your skin changes.

We offer these programs seasonally during fall, winter, and early spring.

Add Celluma LED

For additional skin support, 30 minutes of Celluma LED can be added to your peel treatment when appropriate.

Red and near-infrared LED light support the skin’s natural cellular processes and complement our focus on supporting the skin following corrective treatment.

I like to think of it as another deposit – after making a controlled withdrawal with the peel, we’re giving something back to the skin.

Two ways to begin

I’ve kept the program itself simple.

Prepare + Peel – $795

For clients who need to prepare their skin before beginning professional exfoliation.

This includes:

Advanced Skin Analysis + OBSERV imaging
Personalized skin-preparation plan
Professionally selected cleanser
Professionally selected night cream
2 oz SportShield SPF 45
Three customized professional peel treatments

Your first appointment is for assessment and home-care planning only — there is no facial or peel at this appointment.

You’ll use your prescribed home care for a minimum of two weeks before we reassess your skin for your first peel.

Peel Ready – 3 for $555

For established clients who are already using appropriate professional home care and whose skin is ready for professional exfoliation.

This includes three customized professional peel treatments, with your skin assessed throughout the series.

Already a Monthly Ritual Member?

If you’re a Monthly Ritual member, you can incorporate professional peels into your membership at no additional cost when they are appropriate for your skin.

A peel will replace your regular Monthly Ritual facial for that month. Peel appointments are approximately 45 minutes rather than your regular 90-minute treatment. This is a different professional treatment with different product and protocol costs, so we apply your membership credit to the peel treatment rather than the appointment length.

If we decide a series of peels would benefit your skin, we can incorporate one peel into your Monthly Ritual over three months, with your skin reassessed before each treatment.

Most of our members already follow a customized Dermaviduals home-care routine, so we’ll review your current products and make sure your skin is properly prepared before you begin.

And as always, your treatment is based on what your skin needs that month. If your skin needs barrier support rather than exfoliation, we’ll adjust the plan accordingly.

Want to get started but prefer to spread out the cost? We offer payment options for our peel programs. Just reach out, and we can discuss what works best.

Has my philosophy changed?

No.

And that’s probably the most important thing I want my existing clients to understand.

Introducing peels doesn’t mean I’ve suddenly decided everyone needs more exfoliation.

I still believe healthy skin starts with supporting the barrier.

I still believe we need to understand why we’re doing something to the skin rather than simply following a trend.

And sometimes the best corrective treatment is going to be more support, not more exfoliation.

But when the skin is healthy, prepared and resilient, I believe controlled professional exfoliation can have a place.

So we’re going to approach peels the same way we approach everything else at Skin Care by Shawna:

We make deposits before we make withdrawals.

We prepare.

We correct progressively.

We replenish.

And we continue making more deposits than withdrawals.

Because the goal isn’t to see how much we can take away from the skin.

It’s knowing when the skin has enough in reserve to make a carefully considered withdrawal.
